European Trade Union Committee for Education

A research study completed upon request of the European Parliament’s Committee for Culture and Education reaffirms the central role education plays for a vivid civic political culture and a collective European identity. The author recommends placing a focus on relevant educational measures, with a special emphasis on school education, aiming at providing students with high quality education on history and citizenship. The teaching of these topics should raise awareness of cultural diversity in Europe, provide students with knowledge on their own country’s present and past and encourage young Europeans to become actively engaged in society. Therefore, existing curricula need to be revised and tailor-made teacher training is needed to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to deliver high quality education on history and citizenship.

ETUCE emphasises that education trade unions and social partners are important stakeholders in promoting democratic citizenship. Their role has not been taken into account in this report.
