Report: Encouraging STEM Studies

Published:

The European Parliament published in spring 2015 a report on 'Encouraging STEM studies, Labour Market Situation and Comparison of Practices Targeted at Young People in Different Member States'. The report analyses the labour market situation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) occupations and national initiatives to increase the rate of new students in STEM studies.

Many European member states have a shortage of workforce in STEM related occupations, although the unemployment rate especially among young people remains high. On European and national level a 'wide range of European initiatives' has been implemented, nevertheless the number of STEM VET graduates has decreased and the number of STEM University graduates has only risen insignificantly. Therefore the European member states should develop active labour market politics and 'VET short cycles of higher education' with the focus on STEM occupations.
