Published:

On 17 January 2017, the Education and Science Trade Union of Moldova (ESTUFM) together with ETUCE’s call on the Moldovan Government to support ESTUFM’s demands, achieved the relaunch of negotiations. The ETUCE member organisation had gathered hundreds of people in a picketing action in Chisinau. The demonstrators expressed their dissatisfaction with poor working conditions and demanded the Moldovan Government to increase salaries of scientific researchers and other non-teaching staff at ell education levels to the national minimum wage and to raise school and university teachers’ salaries by 50%.

According to ESTUFM, the minimum wage in the country is 1863 Lei (MDL) (86,50 EUR). Moldovan teaching and non-teaching staff’s salary is 1000 Lei (MDL) (46,50 EUR).

ETUCE called on the Moldovan Government to urgently start negotiations with ESTUFM to find a solution for the benefit of people working in the education sector as well as for the benefit of pupils and students.

Given the success of the protest action in Chisinau, ESTUFM informed that the protest actions were suspended for that period of time. ETUCE continues monitoring.
