Leveraging young teachers’ right to organise
Mandated by the 2018 ESTUS congress resolution “Regeneration of the union – engagement, activation and inclusion of young workers. The key to maintaining and development of organisational power of the union”, the Slovenian education trade union has worked towards reinforcing the position of new and young teachers within the trade union and in the labour market. New and young teachers are often precarious as they enter into the profession, and less keen to engage in union’s work. Attracting young and new members within the union was key for a revitalisation process. The establishment of a “youth section” within the union was a first step in this direction. Within this framework, ESTUS has organised a workshop targeting members and non-members, where young and new teachers could articulate their own demands and come up with new ideas to work together within the union. ESTUS recognises that this is an initial step but sees it as a pre-condition to plan any future self-organised activity targeting young and new teachers’ work within the union.
