Joint Statement by ETUCE, EPSU, and ETF Calls for Increased Public Service Investment on UN Public Service Day

Published:

On June 24, 2024, a pivotal gathering was hosted by the European trade union federations—Education (ETUCE), Public Services (EPSU), and Transport (ETF)—in celebration of the UN Public Service Day. The federations joined forces to voice a shared concern over the damaging impacts of austerity measures on Europe’s population and economic stability.

In a united front, the federations issued a joint statement urging EU institutions to elevate and enhance funding for quality and inclusive public services. This urgent call underscores the vital need for substantial support in light of persistent economic challenges.

Speaking at the event, ETUCE President Larry Flanagan highlighted our specific anxieties, stating, "We are deeply troubled by the reform of the EU economic governance framework, which threatens to limit member states’ ability to adequately invest in education."

He emphasized that the recommendations in the recent Spring Package seem to confirm this distressing trend.

This collective declaration serves as a robust appeal to policymakers: austerity poses a serious risk that necessitates immediate and bold action to secure and advance Europe’s future.
