As it was reported early this week on the EI website, last Sunday night, on 3 March 2019, public service unions, including ETUCE member organisations, succeeded to reach an agreement on the salaries for 800.000 employees of the “Bundesländer”, the German federal states. This includes 200.000 employees working in German public schools, out of whom about 150.000 teachers and other pedagogic personnel, 170.000 researchers and university teachers and 30.000 early childhood educators and social workers. The agreement amounts to overall salary increases of about 8 % which is to be carried out in three steps of 3,2 %, each on 1 January 2019 and 1 January 2020 and another 1,4 % on 1 January 2021.

By agreeing on a comprehensive package in several complex areas, trade unions and employers have shown that they have lived up to their socio-political responsibility. The result strengthens the attractiveness of the civil service", stated Marlis Tepe, GEW President, following the agreement.

Udo Beckmann, National Chairman of VBE, said “In addition, structural improvements have been achieved and will be further negotiated in subsequent discussions”.
