Event: Latvian Presidency Debate on Empowering girls and women in Central Asia

As part of the European Development Days, the Latvian Presidency on the Council of Europe organised a debate on empowering girls and women in central Asia. The discussion took place on 4 June 2015. Speakers at the event were Victors Makarovs the Parliamentary Secretary for Development from Latvia, who promoted the idea to include gender equality as 'a core within the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals'. Iluta Lace, Director of the Resource Centre for Women from Latvia, highlighted that tackling violence against women should be one of the main goals to help women in Central Asia and  explained how much respecting cultural differences mattered in her work. Olga Nogaeva, the international project manager at Formpaper, an agency of the Milan chamber of commerce, industry, craft & agriculture promoted a holistic project approach, in which they support women who had suffered from violence. They provide the victims psychologically, but also legally, socially and economically.
